FCT farmers share 1,200 bundles of IITA cassava stems

The International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) on Thursday distributed about 1,200 bundles of cassava stems to 200 farmers in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stems were jointly distributed by the IITA and the Federal Government, to diversify the economy through agriculture.

Mr Usman Dunama, Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gwagwalada, said that the distribution of the stems was to ensure food security through cassava cultivation.

He said that each of the 200 farmers would get 40 cassava stems from the 1,200 bundles.

The director, however, advised the beneficiaries to use the cassava stems for the purpose for which they were meant.

Dunama commended the IITA for the gesture, and called for additional cassava stems for farmers in the FCT.

The stems were shared to 40 fadama, 30 MDG, 10 Sarkin Noma and 50 cassava farmers, including 70 general farmers. (NAN)
